I once told my husband, “I’m a cat person who loves like a dog; and you’re a dog person who loves like a cat!” He probably raised an eyebrow and wondered if I’d been sipping the catnip tea, but it made perfect sense to me.

Little did I know, my furry analogy held a kernel of wisdom. You see, the idea that love fits neatly into one universal mold is about as accurate as predicting the weather with a banana. It wasn’t until later, much to my amusement, that I realized love is a quirky beast. We all have our unique love languages, like dialects of affection, and assuming we all speak the same one is as misguided as trying to teach a cat to fetch. 😸🐶💕

So here I am with a pressing need to share with you all, what love languages are. Love languages refer to the different ways in which individuals express and receive love and affection. These languages were popularized by Dr. Gary Chapman in his book “The Five Love Languages.” According to Chapman, there are five primary love languages, and people tend to have a dominant love language that influences how they both give and interpret love.

Adopting this idea as a fundamental value to build your relationship on is a great way for you to stay true to yourselves, whether your love is like a moody-yet-doting cat or a devoted-and-you’re-my-everything kind of a dog, while still understanding and expressing love in a way that resonates with your partner.

Types of Love Languages

Ever heard of the saying, “actions speak louder than words”? Well, that’s the essence of love languages. It’s about understanding how you and your partner naturally express and receive love.

  1. Words of Affirmation: Love in Spoken Words For some, love is all about words. If your partner’s love language is words of affirmation, a simple “I love you” can make their day. Compliments, appreciation, and encouraging words fuel their love tank.
  2. Acts of Service: Actions Speak Louder Does your partner appreciate it when you cook them dinner or help with chores? That’s the language of acts of service. Actions, not words, make their heart swell with love.
  3. Receiving Gifts: Love Wrapped in Presents Some people feel most loved when they receive gifts. It’s not about the price tag but the thought and effort behind the gesture. A small, meaningful gift can speak volumes.
  4. Quality Time: Moments that Matter If your partner’s love language is quality time, they crave your undivided attention. Put away the distractions, have meaningful conversations, and create lasting memories together.
  5. Physical Touch: Love through Contact Holding hands, cuddles on the couch, or a warm hug—these gestures speak volumes to those with a love language of physical touch. They find comfort and connection through physical contact.

Cracking the Code in Your Relationship

Now that you know about the basic love languages, it’s time to apply this knowledge to your relationship. Here’s how:

1. Identify Your and Their Love Language

Take a quick look at your past memories with your partner, and take the time to identify what specific actions or words have resonated with your partner. Have they preferred compliments, acts of service, or quality time? And what about you?

Let’s say they’re all about “Quality Time.” So now go ahead an immerse yourself in learning what kind of quality time your partner loves. You’d find out what activities they cherish most—whether it’s cozy movie nights, hiking adventures, having pre-drinks before a party, or even just quiet evenings at home. This is like decoding their unique dialect of love, where every shared moment becomes a syllable in your love conversation.

Next double check with them and see what they feel is their love language. Do the same in identifying your own love language. Do you both share the same love language, or are they different?

2. Speak Their Dialect

So you’ve identified your partner’s love language, let’s say you’re in a relationship with someone whose love language is “Acts of Service,” and you’re more inclined toward “Words of Affirmation.” In this scenario, speaking their language means recognizing that your partner feels loved when you do things for them.

So, to bridge the gap and connect more deeply, you might start doing small acts of service for them, like making them breakfast in bed or helping with tasks they usually handle alone. This demonstrates that you care about their needs and understand how they feel loved. It’s a beautiful way to strengthen your bond and ensure your partner feels cherished.
